Hi all, as we are starting to learn Linux operating system , i think you should just read out the Article so as to get an idea about the evolution and development in unix followed by linux operating system .

Though its not necessary at all to know the history to learn linux , but better to have it 😉

I was a time of 1957 , Bell Labs found a need of an operating system for their computer center, at that time there were running different kinds of batch jobs deal with there needs BESYS operating system was created at Bell Labs. At that time they found enough worth for there jobs.

But later in 1965 Bell Labs decided to join with General Electric and MIT to create Multics (Multiplexed Information and Computing Service). Which was not used for a long time and By April 1969, AT&T made a decision to drop the code of Multics and go with GECOS.

When Multics was withdrawn Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie (God Of C language) needed to rewrite an operating system to run there tasks. ans as a result a system was developed called UNICS (UNiplexed Information and Computing Service)–an ’emasculated Multics’.

later on in 1971 first unix was released .It was included with over 60 commands .and then through out every year almost.. newer versions of unix were developed. The GNU operating system is first announced by Richard Stallman September 27, 1983.unfortunately there is not fully stable version of GNU available till 2013 .

In 1991, Linus Benedict Torvalds was a second year student of Computer Science at the University of Helsinki and a self-taught hacker. MINIX was good, but still it was simply an operating system for the students, designed as a teaching tool rather than an industry strength one.Linux is introduced by Linus Torvalds, a student in Finland.linux code was open source. many companies were born to accept the code and redevelop it for there own needs. In 1994 Red hat linux was introduced.

In 2001 Linus Torvalds releases version 2.4 of the Linux Kernel source code on January 4th.

on the other hand in 2001 Microsoft files a trademark suit against Lindows.com in December. resulting Lindows changes it’s name to Linspire April 14, 2004.
There are may other updates to kernal released later. and latest kernal released was version 3.11 on 26 august 2013 , but it was unstable with SSD testing . All the major and nowadays minor organisations and personal also use linux operating system because of its many advantages over windows and mac.
